What this means for a new business owner
Every new LLC and corporation in these tables needs its own books from its first transaction: a separate bank account, an accounting file set up for its entity type, and a habit of reconciling every month. Setting that up in the first hour is far easier than catching up later.

About the data
The source is the Active Corporations: Beginning 1800 ↗ dataset, which the Department of State describes as every active corporation in New York. We counted records by their initial filing date, from October 1, 2025 to September 30, 2026. The latest filing date in the data was 2026-10-05.
Only active entities are included, so a business that filed and then dissolved before October 6, 2026 is not counted. That also means these numbers cannot be compared fairly with older years, which have had more time to lose businesses. For the official current status of any single business, use the Department of State’s own search.
